HARVEY H. HARSHMAN was born February 5, 1877 at Tiffin, Ohio, his father, James S. Harshman being a former member of the old Knights of Labor. At the age of thirteen years he started to work at the Beatty Glass Company Factory as a carrying-in boy. It was the first day that plant operated in Tiffin.

When the strike against the unlimited system occurred, Mr. Harshman was working as a warming-in boy. Nevertheless, he joined forces with the union glass workers and went out on strike with them. He was admitted to membership in the American Flint Glass Workers' Union in 1899 at Dunkirk, Indiana. He served as a private in the United States Army during the Spanish American War. Later becoming intet'estcd in politics, he was elected to the city council for the term of H)06 to UllO and later served as postmaster of that city from 1912 to 1916.

With the exception of four years served as postmaster, Mr. Harshman serve, Local Union No. 107 in an official capacity and for eighteen years he held the office of president of that local union. At twenty national conventions of the American Flint Glass Workers' Union, Mr. Harshman represented Local Union No. 107 as one of its delegates. The first convention was held in Atlantic City, N. J., in 1901.

For many years he served as secretary of the Press Ware Department Committee at conventions. Mr. Harshman was a member (of the Executive Board in the Press Ware Ilepartment since 1921, up to and including the year 1934. The committee on law being one of the most important committees Mr. Harshman rendered service thereon as its secretary and performed the duties of that office efficiently.

It was at the Morgantown, W. Va. Convention in l!J:n that he was elected delegate to the American Federation of Labc,r Convention in Vancouver, British Columbia. At the National Convention of the American Flint Glass Workers' Union held in Egg Harbor City, N. J., in 1934, Mr. Harshman was elected a National Representati\'e of the union and he was re-elected to the important position at the 1935 convention held in the city rof Jeannette, Pa. He still holds his membership in Local Union No. l07, Dunkirk, Indiana.

At this time we are indeed sorry to record that Mr. Harshman is confined to his home ill, having become seriously afflicted on Sunday, October 13, while in pursuit of his official duties.
